How to Design a Room from the Floor Up

Posted on: 3rd August 2016

At Reform Flooring, many of our customers come to us when they’re completely redesigning a room in their home. The type of flooring they choose is a very important part of their design, and we take the time to talk them through the benefits of different materials and products. If you want to shake things up in your home but don’t know where to start, take a look at our guide to designing a room from the floor up.

Start with a Blank Canvas

When you’re redesigning a room, try to look at it as a blank canvas. At the moment, your room has furniture and colour and decorations, and it can be hard to look past that and really see the space. Try creating a simple 3D line drawing and a plan of the room, complete with its dimensions. It’ll help you to look at your room as a space with lots of possibilities, rather than a room you already use every day. That’s how interior designers start with any project.

Make a List

When you have a blank canvas, you can think about what you can do with it. Think about what you need this room to do – is it a family room to spend quality time with the kids in, or a quiet getaway to get a few moments’ peace and quiet? Jot down what you need from your room, and don’t worry about limitations like budget or the size of the room. A well-designed room will meet your needs, so long as you plan carefully.

Spark Your Imagination

When you’ve thought about what you need your room to do, think about what you want it to do. Look at things that inspire you – design magazines, catalogues, browsing through Pinterest, blogs – and collect them all together to create a moodboard packed with ideas. Don’t worry if you start off a little haphazardly – you’ll work out what you like as you go on. Get creative: cut and stick pictures along with wallpaper and paint samples, fabrics, even abstract things like doodles and buttons that tie in with your ideas.

Get Real

No you’re full of ideas, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to bring them to life. It’s best to think about the big things first, and worry about the little details later. Your floor is a good place to start. If you’re replacing it, it will probably be the biggest single expense in your redesign, and its colour and material will set the tone for the whole room.
