A Guide to Caring for Your New Flooring

Posted on: 3rd May 2016

The carpet is laid in the lounge, the natural oak in the kitchen and the vinyl tiles in the bathroom. Everywhere, your flooring is looking beautiful. However, you have children, you have pets, and someone doesn’t always kick off his gardening shoes at the back door when he needs to grab something from the utility room. How long can your new flooring stay looking beautiful? With the right care - a very long time indeed. Here are our top tips.

Caring for Carpets

Carpets have two main enemies: shoes and spills. A shoes-off-at-the-door policy has to be enforced. Consider five minutes vacuuming as a punishment for offenders – unless it really would ruin your dinner party. When it comes to spills, speed is of the essence. Mop quickly with a damp cloth to prevent staining. We recommend a regular vacuuming (at least once a week) to bust the dust.

Caring for Hardwood Floors

It is fairly easy to make scratches and gouges in a hardwood floor by dragging furniture across it. Make sure any shard legs or casters are resting on a mat or protective caster cups. When cleaning, make sure that the cleaning product you use is marked as suitable for hardwoods.

Caring for Vinyl Floors

One of the reasons vinyl is so popular is that it is so easy to clean. When it comes to vinyl, gentle and often works a treat. Brush any debris up with a soft brush that is used solely for indoors. Mop with warm but not boiling water. Avoid over-soaking the mop-head, as the water from a sopping wet floor may work its way into the seams of your vinyl flooring and affect the bonding of the glue.
