5 unusual floors that will make you think about what you're walking on

However, there are some strange and exciting kinds of floors that we don't make — but still find fascinating. Here are a few of the most beautiful and bizarre floors we've come across. Maybe they'll give you some design inspiration...

Interactive floors

It might sound like the stuff of science fiction, but interactive flooring is here. The images are projected onto the floor, and your movements affect the projection, just like in a video game. You can virtually make ripples in water, walk through a field of grass, and even play football. At the moment interactive floor and wall projections are mostly used in retail establishments and at events, but it is possible to set one up in your own home. 

Optical illusion floor

If virtual floors haven't blown your mind already, how about this incredible optical illusion floor? Found in a Paris video game shop, this carpet's bent lines create the effect of bumps and dips — even though the surface is completely flat. Do you think you could walk across this without tripping up?

Penny floor

In 2009, New York hotel The Standard Grill decided to retile its entrance hall — with thousands of copper pennies. It's a beautiful and surprisingly cheap surface, and a few thrifty people have even recreated the look at home.

Doodle floor

Olle Hemmendorff is a designer who decided one day that he didn't like his wooden floors. He covered them in white plastic, and doodled over them with a black marker pen. It's a bold, striking look — but we don't think everyone is as avid a doodler as him!

Digital printed floor

Airports aren't normally the prettiest of places, but Iranian artist Seyed Alavi did his best to make Sacramento International Airport look nice with a digital printed floor. The pedestrian bridge to the carpark features an image of an aerial view of Sacramento, printed onto the carpet.
