How to Prevent Scratches on a Wooden Floor

Posted on: 4th July 2017

A real wood floor is a beautiful and elegant investment and once you've found your perfect floor, the last thing you'll want is to cause unnecessary scratching when moving furniture. Follow some basic tips to prevent marks and you'll be able to enjoy your scratch-free wooden flooring for years to come.

Furniture on wooden flooring

Tip #1

Antique or traditionally made furniture with metal or wooden legs may scratch a wooden floor when moved. Consider how often you may need to move the furniture or whether it is likely to move slightly during the course of the day due to the nature of its use. For example, a dining table is unlikely to be moved often, but there may be accidental moving which causes gradual scuffing to build up.

Tip #2

Dining room or kitchen chairs are likely to be moved quite frequently. One possible option is to have the bottoms of the legs sanded and oiled so the surfaces of the feet are slightly curved and do not scrape on the floor when moved.

Tip #3

Before rearranging furniture, try placing a business card or small piece of construction paper under each leg (the card can be held in place with blue-tack). Alternatively wrap the bottoms of the furniture legs in plastic bags, securing them with rubber bands.

Tip #4

When moving particularly heavy furniture, you can make thicker pads out of cloth (such as a folded tea towel) to place under the legs. Enlist the help of another person to help you move the item to avoid dragging it across the floor as much as possible.

Tip #5

It may be a compromise in terms of attractiveness but, for items which are going to be moved frequently, consider purchasing furniture that comes with attachable wheels. Furniture without wheels can have glider pads affixed as a subtler and more aesthetically pleasing option. Specially designed rubber, felt and cork pads are also available.
